Earth Days: Simple Practices for a Rooted Childhood

Some days just feel like an Earth Day.

The kids are muddy, the dog’s tracking in grass clumps, and somehow everyone ends up outside longer than expected. There’s dirt on the floor, snacks in the sun, maybe a worm in someone’s pocket. Time stretches out in the best way.

Painted Oakers in no rush

We don’t usually plan them. They just sort of...happen.

But when they do, they remind us of what matters most: fresh air, full hearts, and the kind of slow, messy magic that lives in backyard adventures, barefoot mornings, and one more story under the blanket.

Why “Earth Days”?

That feeling—that deep breath of this is enough—is exactly why we call them Earth Days.

allow them to daydream

In our elemental rhythm at Sunday Element Co., Earth is the element of ritual, home, patience, and presence. It’s the soil everything grows from—including a childhood that’s allowed to take its time.

We’re beginning this series, Earth Days, as a way to share ideas and inspiration for making life with children slower, richer, and more connected to the natural world.

Because every child deserves time to dig, daydream, and grow in their own rhythm. And every grown-up deserves the chance to pause and remember how that feels.

What You’ll Find Here

Each Earth Days post will include a few simple, seasonal ways to invite Earth energy into your day—through play, ritual, rhythm, and presence. You won’t need a Pinterest-perfect setup or a curriculum binder. Just an open window, a soft spot to land, and a willingness to slow down.

You might find:

  • A nature-based invitation for play or learning

  • A seasonal story, recipe, or poem to share

  • A grounding practice for adults or children (or both)

  • A reflection on what it means to live slowly, together

  • Gentle encouragement to let things be a little less rushed

Start Here: A Simple Earth Day

Choose one (or all) of the following today—no pressure, just presence.

🌱 Make Mud Pies: Set out bowls, spoons, water, dirt. Step back. Let the magic unfold.

📚 Read Under a Blanket Fort: Stack some pillows. Dim the lights. Read a story with no rush to “get to the end.”

🌾 Walk Barefoot: In the grass, on the porch, down the path. Let feet remember what the ground feels like.

🥣 Bake Something Simple: Bread, muffins, a pot of soup. Let your child stir, scoop, and wait while it rises.

🪵 Create a Family Slow-Down Spot: A basket of books, a wool blanket, a candle. Declare it “Earth Space” and let it hold the quiet.

Let the Earth Hold You, Too

You don’t have to create an ideal childhood. You just have to create space. And you don’t have to do it alone.

This is what the Painted Oak Project is all about—supporting parents, educators, and programs as they reclaim childhood from the pace of the modern world and root it in something deeper, wilder, and more whole.

The Earth Days series is one small piece of that mission. What does this look like in your world? We’d love to hear how you’re slowing down, digging in, and making space for what really matters.
